Halal catering
Halal catering costs £15 to £30 per head in the UK for a buffet or served event menu, and staffed weddings and larger events commonly carry a minimum spend of £800 to £1,500. All meat and poultry must come from a halal supplier, and a caterer should be able to name the body that certifies it.
What this covers
What it costs. A halal buffet costs £15 to £25 per head delivered, and a served or staffed halal event menu £20 to £35. Full cost breakdown.
What the job covers
- A halal walima dinner for 250 with staff
- A mixed grill and biryani buffet for an Eid party
- Aqiqah catering for 80 guests at home
- Halal canapés and bowl food for a corporate reception
- A delivered halal buffet for a community centre event
What is involved
Halal caterers cook for weddings and walima receptions, aqiqah, Eid and Ramadan gatherings, birthdays, funerals and corporate events. Menus range across South Asian, Middle Eastern, Turkish, North African and Mediterranean grill cooking, delivered as a buffet or served with staff. For weddings, halal catering often overlaps with Asian wedding catering, and many caterers do both.
Certification is the question that matters most to many hosts. The UK has more than one halal certification body, and they differ: the Halal Monitoring Committee does not accept stunning before slaughter, while the Halal Food Authority accepts some forms of it. Families and guests may have a firm view, so ask which body certifies the caterer's meat supplier. A halal caterer should also cook without alcohol, and if they cook non-halal food too, explain how they keep it apart. Halal certification is separate from the food hygiene rating, which covers safety, not religious requirements.
The practical check is the full quote at your numbers. Ask whether it includes staff, chafing dishes, crockery and VAT, and what the minimum spend is. caterers.trade lists only caterers rated 3 or above, or Pass in Scotland.
Choosing someone for the job
Ask which body certifies their meat supplier, and whether they cook anything that is not halal in the same kitchen. Ask for the price per head at your numbers, with staff, crockery and VAT listed. Ask what the minimum spend is. Ask for vegetarian dishes for guests who want them. And for weddings, ask whether they also cover the mehndi or other events, so one caterer handles the whole family.

Common questions
How much does halal catering cost?
£15 to £30 per head for a buffet or served menu. Staffed weddings and larger events often carry a minimum spend of £800 to £1,500, and grill menus sit at the upper end.
Who certifies halal meat in the UK?
There are several certification bodies, including the Halal Monitoring Committee and the Halal Food Authority. They set different standards, so ask a caterer which one certifies their meat supplier.
What is the difference between HMC and HFA halal?
The main difference is stunning. The Halal Monitoring Committee does not accept stunning before slaughter; the Halal Food Authority accepts some forms of stunning that do not kill the animal. Which you need depends on your family or guests.
Is halal food checked by food hygiene inspectors?
Council inspectors check food safety and hygiene, not religious requirements. Halal status is checked by the certification body, and the food hygiene rating covers everything else.
